กล้วยไม้ หรือ เอื้อง เป็นพืชดอกที่มีความหลากหลาย โดยมีประมาณ 899 สกุล และมีประมาณ 27,000 ชนิดที่มีการยอมรับ กล้วยไม้อยู่ในกลุ่มพืชใบเลี้ยงเดี่ยว อยู่ในวงศ์(En:Orchidaceae) แบ่งตามลักษณะการเติบโตได้ดังนี้
– กล้วยไม้อากาศ (En:Epiphyte) คือ กล้วยไม้ที่เกาะหรืออิงอาศัยอยู่บนต้นไม้อื่น โดยมีรากเกาะอยู่กับกิ่งไม้หรือลำต้น
– กล้วยไม้ดิน (Terrestrial) คือ กล้วยไม้ที่ขึ้นอยู่ตามพื้นดินที่ปกคลุมด้วยอินทรีย์วัตถุ
กล้วยไม้เป็นพืชใบเลี้ยงเดี่ยว ในวงศ์ Orchidaceae เป็นไม้ตัดดอกยอดนิยม เป็นไม้ตัดดอกที่มีอายุการใช้งานได้นาน และเป็นพืชเศรษฐกิจที่มีความสำคัญของไทย ขายได้ประเทศปีละหลายร้อยล้านบาท
หลังการเปลี่ยนแปลงระบอบการปกครองในปี
พ.ศ. 2475 สภาพการเลี้ยงก็ยังคงจำกัดอยู่ในวงแคบ
พ.ศ. 2493 การพัฒนาการปลูกเลี้ยงกล้วยไม้เป็นไปอย่างจริงจัง โดยได้มีการวิจัย
พ.ศ. 2497 ได้เริ่มเปิดการฝึกอบรมการเลี้ยงกล้วยไม้ให้แก่ประชาชนทั่วไป
พ.ศ. 2498 มีการจัดตั้งชมรมกล้วยไม้ขึ้น
พ.ศ. 2500 ได้รับการสถาปนาเป็นสมาคมกล้วยไม้ และการพัฒนาวงการ กล้วยไม้ออกเผยแพร่ทั้งทางโทรทัศน์ วิทยุ สิ่งพิมพ์ ทำให้วงการกล้วยไม้ของประเทศไทยขยายตัวออกไปอย่างกว้างขวาง
พ.ศ. 2501 ได้มีการเปิดการสอนวิชากล้วยไม้ขึ้นในมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์เป็นครั้งแรก เพื่อผลิตนักวิชาการและพัฒนางานวิจัยกล้วยไม้ของประเทศ ทำให้การปลูกเลี้ยงกล้วยไม้ไม่อยู่ภายในวงแคบอีกต่อไป
พ.ศ. 2509 เริ่มการทำสวนกล้วยไม้ตัดดอกอย่างจริงจังทั่วประเทศ
การรดน้ำกล้วยไม้ปกติควรรดวันละครั้ง ในเวลาที่เหมาะสมตอนเช้าเวลาประมาณ 6.00–9.00 น. ไม่ควรรดน้ำกล้วยไม้ควรรดให้เปียกมาก
ให้ปุ๋ยสม่ำเสมออาทิตย์ละครั้ง เวลาแสงแดดในตอนจนถึง เวลาประมาณ 11.00 น.
